How to install your LinksCube turf
Installing Artificial Turf for the LinksCube
Creating a high-performance golf surface for your LinksCube simulator starts with a solid, professional-grade artificial turf installation. While artificial grass might look simple on the surface, ensuring durability, drainage, and consistency underfoot requires the right method and materials.
Whether you’re preparing a surface for putting, full-swing shots, or short-game work, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to achieve a flawless turf install worthy of the LinksCube.
Essential Tools & Materials
To ensure a clean and professional finish, we recommend the following tools:
-
Turf cutter or spade
-
Stanley knife (with plenty of spare blades)
-
Joining tape & adhesive
-
Tape measure
-
Galvanised nails or ground pins
-
Shovel & compactor planks
-
Broom or stiff brush
-
Protective gloves
-
Optional edging system (e.g. VertEdge)
Base Preparation
Can I lay artificial grass on soil?
Not directly. A turf base must be stable, well-drained, and weather-resistant. For best results:
-
Excavate to ~50mm depth.
-
Apply a sub-base layer: MOT Type 1 followed by granite dust (6mm).
-
Compact thoroughly to form a smooth, level surface.
Laying on Concrete or Decking?
You can lay turf on concrete or decking if the surface is solid and drains well. However, we strongly recommend using an underlay foam pad (such as Lazy Foam) for added cushioning, shock absorption, and water control. Ensure surfaces are clean and free from mould or debris before installing.

Step-by-Step Turf Installation for LinksCube
Step 1: Clear & Measure the Area
Outline the size and shape of your simulator surface. Use a turf cutter or spade to remove vegetation or old turf. Ensure all utilities (pipes/cables) are located and clear of the working depth.
Step 2: Install Edge Restraints
If there are no built-in boundaries, install an edging system such as VertEdge. Secure into the soil, leaving a visible edge to help guide turf placement and trimming.
Step 3: Lay and Level the Base
Spread 6mm of granite dust or sharp sand across the compacted MOT sub-base. Use timber boards to screed and level the surface. Compact once more for a firm foundation.
Step 4: Apply Weed Membrane
Roll out a weed barrier over the entire area. Pin it in place using galvanised nails spaced every 75cm. Trim excess material. This ensures long-term turf health and proper drainage.
Step 5: Roll Out the Artificial Turf
Unroll the turf across the prepared area. Align the pile direction to suit the main viewing angle (typically facing the home or simulator entrance). Trim edges cleanly using a sharp blade—especially around VertEdge.
Step 6: Secure & Infill
Secure the turf perimeter with nails or adhesive. Apply kiln-dried sand (6–8 kg/m²) to weigh down the turf, support the blades, and enhance realism. Brush vigorously to lift the pile and distribute infill evenly.
