Golf Simulator Projector Mounting: Ceiling vs Floor, Cables & Clean Setups

One question we get on WhatsApp almost every week, and a customer called James asked it perfectly while planning his golf room build: “Where does the projector actually go — ceiling or floor? And does the HDMI cable have to be wired up the walls?” It sounds like a small detail next to choosing a launch monitor, but projector mounting is the difference between a simulator that looks like a professional install and one with a cable taped across the carpet waiting to trip someone mid-swing. James's room hadn't even been built yet, which turned out to be the best possible position to be in — more on that below. Here's exactly what I told him.

The two homes for a simulator projector

Every home golf simulator projector lives in one of two places: mounted on the ceiling behind the golfer, or sitting on the floor in front of the golfer inside a protective floor enclosure. Both work. I've installed both. They just suit different rooms and different owners.

Ceiling mount: out of the way, out of mind

This is what most people picture and what I fit most often. The projector hangs from a bracket behind and above the hitting position, firing over your head at the impact screen. The case for it is simple: it's completely out of the way. Nothing on the floor to step over, nothing for a shanked wedge to find, and the beam passes above you so your body never blocks the image at address. Once it's up, you forget it exists — which is exactly what you want from a projector.

The trade-off is that it's a proper little installation job: you're drilling into joists, running a cable through or along the ceiling, and getting the alignment right while up a ladder. An hour or two of care, once, for years of clean setup.

Floor enclosure: no drilling, and some people simply prefer it

The alternative is a floor-mounted projector sitting a metre or two in front of the hitting position, firing up and forward at the screen. Good floor mounts come as a small enclosure with a protective cover — a metal or timber housing with a shielded window that takes a deflected ball without the projector taking the hit. Some of our customers actively prefer this: nothing to drill, the projector is at arm's reach for switching inputs, and if you rent or don't want holes in a finished ceiling it's the obvious answer.

The trade-offs are real, though. The projector and its cables now live on the floor in the same postcode as your golf balls, the enclosure sits inside your sight line, and floor placement is where most shadow and cable mistakes happen. If you go this route, buy a proper enclosure with a cover — a bare projector on a coffee table in front of a golf screen is a £600 accident on a countdown.

What mount should you actually buy?

For ceiling installs, a universal projector ceiling mount is what you want — the type with an adjustable spider bracket that bolts to the threaded holes on the projector's underside, plus tilt and swivel adjustment. Two things matter far more than brand. First, fix it into a ceiling joist, not just plasterboard; a projector is only 3–4kg but it's 3–4kg hanging over your head while you swing a driver underneath it. Second, if your ceiling is high, get a mount with a drop pole so you can bring the projector down to the height that matches your screen geometry rather than firing at a steep angle and relying on heavy keystone correction, which softens the image.

Position-wise, the projector wants to be behind the hitting position, roughly centred on the screen, at a distance set by its throw ratio — check the manufacturer's throw calculator against your room depth before you drill anything. This is the same geometry homework I walk through in our guide to choosing a golf simulator projector, and it's worth doing on paper first: I've seen a customer mount a standard-throw projector in a room that needed a short-throw, and no bracket in the world fixes that.

Shadows: the problem you don't see until your first swing

A projector throws light in a straight line, and anything between the lens and the screen — you, your club, your follow-through — prints a shadow on the picture. Each mounting position has its own shadow rules.

Ceiling mounted: get the projector behind your head height and the beam clears you at address. The mistake is mounting it too low or too far forward, so your backswing or a tall follow-through clips the beam. Stand at your hitting position, have someone shine a torch from the proposed mount point at the screen, and swing slowly — if your hands or clubhead cross the light, move the mount back or up.

Floor mounted: the beam travels up and forwards from around shin height, so the danger zone is low and central. Offset the enclosure slightly toward the toe side rather than dead centre, and keep it far enough forward that your clubhead at impact isn't crossing the light. You'll still get a brief ball shadow as the ball flies through the beam — every floor setup does — but it's a flicker, not a problem. What you're avoiding is a permanent grey golfer-shaped hole in the picture.

Cables: up the wall, in trunking, or first-fix — James's advantage

Now the second half of James's question: does the HDMI have to be wired up the walls? No — but the cable has to get from your PC or device to the projector somehow, and there are three grades of doing it properly.

Surface trunking (the retrofit answer): self-adhesive white PVC trunking, a few pounds a metre from any DIY shed, runs the HDMI up the wall and across the ceiling line to the projector. Paintable, tidy, completely reversible. This is what I recommend for most finished rooms — fifteen minutes of work and the cable disappears visually without a single hole in the plasterboard.

In-wall / in-ceiling (the built-in answer): the cable runs inside the wall cavity and above the plasterboard, emerging at a brush plate by the projector. This is the invisible option, and it's cheap if the wall is already open.

First fix (the James answer): James's room didn't exist yet — and that is the golden scenario. If your room is being built or renovated, have the electrician run an HDMI (plus a spare, cables fail) and a power socket to the projector position before the plasterboard goes on, exactly as they would for a wall-mounted TV. It costs almost nothing during a build and saves every compromise later. I told James to first-fix two HDMIs and power to the ceiling mount point, plus power and a data run to where the launch monitor and PC would live. Ten minutes on the phone with his builder, and his cable problem was solved before it existed.

One technical note for bigger rooms: passive HDMI gets unreliable beyond about 10m, especially at 4K. For long runs, use an active/optical HDMI cable — they cost more but they just work. And remember the projector needs mains power at the mount point too; a beautiful hidden HDMI with an extension lead dangling to a floor socket defeats the purpose.

Connecting the projector to the launch monitor

The projector doesn't usually connect to the launch monitor directly — it connects to whatever runs your simulator software. With a radar unit like the FlightScope Mevo Gen2, the monitor talks wirelessly to a PC, laptop or iPad running the sim software, and that device feeds the projector over the HDMI you just routed. Some all-in-one camera units can output to a projector with barely anything in between. Either way, the practical wiring is the same: one HDMI from “the thing running the software” to the projector. A caution from testing: wireless casting (AirPlay, Miracast and friends) is tempting because it needs no cable at all, but it adds latency and the occasional dropout — fine for showing holiday photos, maddening when your ball flight renders half a second after impact. For simulator use, we found a physical HDMI is worth every minute of the installation.

The mistakes that put cables across the hitting zone

Almost every messy simulator I've been asked to rescue made one of the same four mistakes. One: putting the PC or laptop on the opposite side of the room from the projector, guaranteeing a cable crossing the floor — plan the device, projector and power on the same side of the hitting zone. Two: running a floor projector's HDMI straight back through the stance area because it's the shortest route; route it around the perimeter of the room instead, taped or in floor trunking, never across where you stand or swing. Three: buying the exact cable length needed with nothing spare, so it hangs taut in mid-air instead of following the wall. Buy 2m more than the tape measure says. Four: leaving the power brick and cable slack in the ball-landing zone next to a floor enclosure. Cable-tie the slack inside or behind the enclosure.

None of this is difficult — it's just easier to do before the first session than after the habit of stepping over a wire has set in. A cable across the hitting zone isn't only ugly, it's a genuine trip hazard while you're holding a golf club at speed near a hard-fronted screen. Frequently asked questions

Is it better to ceiling mount or floor mount a golf simulator projector?

Ceiling mounting is better for most permanent rooms: it's out of the swing, out of sight, and has the lowest shadow risk. Floor enclosures win when you can't or won't drill — rentals, temporary setups — provided you buy one with a protective cover and route the cable around, never across, the hitting zone.

Does the HDMI cable have to be wired inside the wall?

No. Surface trunking up the wall looks tidy, costs a few pounds and is fully reversible. In-wall routing is the invisible upgrade, and if your room is still being built, have the electrician first-fix two HDMI runs and power to the projector position before plasterboarding — the cheapest moment it will ever be.

How do I stop my shadow appearing on the impact screen?

Mount the projector so the beam never crosses your body or club: behind and above head height for ceiling mounts, low, forward and slightly offset for floor mounts. Test with a torch from the proposed position before fixing anything.

Does the projector plug into the launch monitor?

Not directly, usually. The launch monitor connects (typically wirelessly) to the PC, laptop or tablet running your simulator software, and that device feeds the projector via HDMI. Plan power and cable routes for both the projector position and the device position.
