Every few weeks someone emails me a photo of their garden shed and asks whether it could become a garden shed golf simulator. I love the ambition, and I am going to give you the honest answer up front: most UK sheds cannot do it, because they fail on height before anything else. But "most" is not "all", and the ones that qualify can become genuinely brilliant sim rooms for a fraction of the cost of a purpose-built garden room. This guide walks through the measurements that decide it in two minutes, then the insulation, damp and power work a conversion actually needs, and finally the honest crossover point where you should stop trying to convert a shed and look at a garden room instead.

The two-minute test: your shed vs the minimum dimensions

A usable golf simulator needs, at absolute minimum, about 3m of width, 3m of depth and 2.4m of ceiling height at the point where you swing. That height figure is the one that kills most shed conversions: it is what a driver arc needs for a golfer of average height, with almost no margin. I measured a long run of customers' swings under sensor systems while researching this, and a 1.8m golfer's driver arc peaks around 2.3m, which is why I treat 2.4m as a floor rather than a target. Now the uncomfortable part. Standard UK garden sheds are sold in imperial sizes, and here is how they translate:

Two catches to note when you measure. First, quoted shed heights are external ridge heights; internal clearance is lower, and only at the apex line. A pent-roof shed loses height across its whole width, which is why apex roofs convert better. Second, many sheds built since 2020 were deliberately kept under 2.5m overall to sit within permitted development rules near boundaries, which is precisely the height budget a simulator needs. Measure your internal apex clearance with a tape, stand where you would hit, and swing your driver slowly. If the club touches, the conversation is over, and no amount of enthusiasm changes it.

Why height is non-negotiable but depth has tricks

If you are short on depth, there are workarounds: hitting from close to the back wall, a radar unit swapped for a camera-based monitor that needs less rear space, or the door kept open behind you in summer. If you are short on height, there are none, because the fix is structural. I have seen people try flat-swing drills and teeing down to cheat a 2.2m ceiling, and after a few months a customer will quietly admit they only ever use wedges. A wedge-only simulator is a £3,000 chipping net.

The one honest height fix is digging out and lowering the floor, which some owners of brick outbuildings do, but for a timber shed on a concrete pad it means rebuilding the base, and at that point the garden room maths starts winning, which we will get to.

Insulation, damp and power: the unglamorous essentials

Say your shed passes the tape-measure test. A bare shed is still not a sim room, because launch monitors, projectors and laptops hate the two things British sheds do best: condensation and cold. Here is the conversion work that matters, roughly in spending order.

Damp-proofing and ventilation first

Electronics living in an unheated timber box will suffer condensation every time a mild damp day follows a cold night. Before any kit moves in: sound roof felt, a membrane and airflow gap if you are lining the walls, and ventilation so moisture can leave. In a converted 5m log cabin near Bristol we installed a sim for an owner who had skipped ventilation, and within one winter the projector lens was fogging mid-session; two vents and a £40 dehumidifier solved what looked like a hardware fault.

Insulation second

50mm PIR board between studs, vapour barrier, then OSB or plasterboard lining is the standard recipe, and it does double duty: it keeps you practising in January and it muffles impact noise for the neighbours. Budget £300 to £800 in materials for a mid-size shed doing it yourself. The bonus is that an insulated, lined shed also holds a screen and projector mount far better than bare framing.

Power done properly

A simulator wants a modest but permanent supply: launch monitor, projector, laptop and a heater is comfortably under 2kW, but it needs to be there in February. That means an armoured cable spur from the house installed by an electrician, which is notifiable work under Part P of the building regulations; budget £500 to £1,000 depending on the cable run. An extension lead through a window will technically light up a demo, and I have watched customers try to live with it; nobody lasts a season.

When a shed works, and when you need a garden room

After years of these conversations, my honest rule of thumb is this. A shed conversion makes sense when you already own a large shed, workshop or log cabin of roughly 3.6m x 3m or bigger with 2.4m+ internal apex clearance, and the structure is sound. You are then spending £1,000 to £2,000 on insulation, lining and power to unlock a sim space, which is superb value.

What rarely makes sense is buying a new big shed specifically to convert. By the time you have bought a quality 16ft x 10ft building, a proper base, insulation, lining and electrics, you are within touching distance of an insulated garden room built for habitable use, with better height, proper glazing and none of the compromise. On planning: most sheds and garden rooms fall under permitted development, but the 2.5m height limit within 2m of a boundary is exactly where sim buildings get caught, because you want every centimetre of internal height. Kitting out a converted shed on a budget

Shed conversions reward compact, tough kit. That is roughly half the cost of the garden-room route, which is exactly why it is worth two minutes with a tape measure to find out if your shed qualifies.

What is the minimum shed size for a golf simulator?

Around 3.6m x 3m internally with 2.4m of clearance at your swing position, which in shed terms means a 12ft x 10ft apex-roof building or larger. Anything smaller works only for putting and chipping. Can I use a launch monitor in an uninsulated shed?

You can hit balls in one, but leaving electronics there year-round is asking for condensation damage, and most manufacturers quote minimum operating temperatures that a British shed in January sits below. Either insulate and heat the space or carry the launch monitor indoors after each session.

Do I need planning permission to convert my shed into a simulator room?

Converting the inside of an existing shed does not normally need planning permission, since you are not altering the building. Raising the roof for height, or replacing the shed with a taller building, is where permitted development limits apply, particularly the 2.5m cap within 2m of a boundary. Is a shed simulator usable in winter?

An insulated one, absolutely, and winter is when it earns its keep. With 50mm PIR insulation and a small heater, customers report comfortable sessions in freezing weather, and the projector image actually looks its best in the dark months. An uninsulated shed, by contrast, is realistically a three-season space at best.
