Ceiling under 2.7m?

Golf simulator for a low ceiling

Most simulator rooms we plan have a ceiling of 2.7m or more. Plenty of garages, lofts and garden rooms sit at 2.4 to 2.6m. A sim can still work in them, as long as everyone is honest about which clubs you can swing and which launch monitor goes where.

Why the ceiling matters

Two different things need the height

Your swing

The club needs room at the top of the backswing and the follow-through. 2.7m is the minimum for a full driver swing, and 3m or more is ideal. Under 2.7m, irons and wedges are the honest promise; whether you can swing a driver depends on your height and your swing, so stand where you would hit and make a slow swing with your longest club before you buy.

The launch monitor

Where the unit sits decides what it needs. Floor units sit beside the ball and need nothing overhead. Overhead units bolt to the ceiling inside a set height window. Radar units sit behind you, so they need a longer room rather than a taller one.

The enclosure and projector matter too. SimSpace SIM 0 to SIM 4 bays are 2.5m high inside and stand about 2.6m over the frame. Under a 2.7m ceiling a projector arm puts the projector close to head height, so a floor case, which keeps the ceiling clear, is the usual answer.

Launch monitors

Which launch monitors suit a 2.4–2.7m room

On the floor beside the ball: nothing overhead

On the ceiling: needs a set height window

Radar behind you: needs length, not height

Placement figures are from each maker’s manual or spec page. Under 2.7m, the floor units are the usual route; the Garmin R50 simulator package from £7,337.98 puts one in a complete room.

Irons and wedges, or driver?

What we will tell you honestly

  • 2.7m or more: a full swing with every club for most golfers; 3m or more is comfortable.
  • Under 2.7m: plan on irons and wedges. Driver may or may not be possible, and your height and swing decide it, so we would rather say so before you order than after.
  • Width matters as much: height can sometimes be found, by opening a garage or outbuilding up to the rafters. Width is the one dimension you cannot change.
  • In a garage, check the door: up-and-over runners and roller-door boxes are often the lowest point. A roller door or side-hinged doors usually clear the ceiling.

Send our experts your width, length and the lowest ceiling height where you would swing. They will tell you which clubs you can swing, which launch monitor suits the room, and whether a bay or a screen-only build fits best.

Check your room

Three measurements, an honest answer

Measure the width, the length and the lowest point of the ceiling where you would swing. The checker names the SimSpace size that fits, and our experts will look at anything that comes out tight.

Will a sim fit my room?

Measure inside the room, in metres. We’ll tell you honestly which size fits.

We usually look for 3.0m wide, 4.2m long and a 2.7m ceiling. Short on length? The 1m-deep SIM 0 works from 2.8m.

Questions

Low-ceiling sim questions

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

We plan for 2.7m as the minimum for a full driver swing, with 3m or more ideal. Below 2.7m a simulator can still work for irons and wedges, and our experts will tell you honestly what your room allows.

Can I use a ceiling-mounted launch monitor with a 2.5m ceiling?

Not usually. The Uneekor EYE XO, EYE XO2 and EYE XR mount at 2.7–3.0m, the ProTee VX at 2.74–3.05m and the Foresight Falcon at 2.9–3.2m. In a lower room, a floor unit beside the ball, such as the Garmin R50, Foresight GC3 or Uneekor Eye Mini, is the usual choice.

Will a SimSpace enclosure fit under a 2.5m ceiling?

SimSpace SIM 0 to SIM 4 bays are 2.5m high inside and about 2.6m over the frame, so they need a ceiling of about 2.6m to stand. Below that, a screen-only build sized to your room is the way to go.

Where should the projector go in a low room?

Under a 2.7m ceiling a projector arm puts the projector close to head height. The SimSpace floor projector case keeps it on the floor between the mat and the screen, out of the way of your swing; it is built for the BenQ AH500ST.
