Best Launch Monitors for Left- and Right-Handed Golfers (UK): Which Switch Sides Without Being Moved
Every launch monitor we sell works for left- and right-handed golfers; handedness is a setting in the app or on the unit. What differs is whether the box has to move when the other hand steps up. Radar behind the ball and overhead cameras stay put; most side-mounted cameras cross to the other side of the ball.
This matters more than it sounds. In a household where a left-hander and a right-hander swap every few shots, a unit that needs carrying across and re-aligning each time is the difference between a simulator that gets used and one that gets argued over. Below is where each unit we sell sits, what its maker's manual says, and how to lay out a bay that both hands can use.
Why placement decides it
Picture the target line running from the ball to the screen. A right-hander stands on one side of that line; a left-hander hitting at the same screen stands on the other. Anything that sits beside the ball, across from the player, is standing exactly where the other-handed player needs to be. Anything on the line itself, behind the ball or in front of it, or on the ceiling, is in the same place for both.
So there are three groups: radar units behind the ball, cameras beside the ball, and cameras overhead. Our Sim Buyer Docs page on radar vs camera launch monitors explains the two technologies; here I'm only interested in where they sit.
Units that stay put when hands swap
Radar, behind the ball
Radar units sit behind you on the target line and follow the ball with radio waves. The FlightScope Mevo Gen2 goes 2.4 m directly behind the ball per its manual, the Garmin Approach R10 1.8 m to 2.4 m behind the tee, and the Full Swing KIT 3.05 m behind. All three are on the centre line, so a left-hander and a right-hander hit from the same spot and the unit never moves. You switch the player profile and go.
The cost is length. A radar unit needs its manual distance behind the ball on top of the 4.2 m our rooms start at: 5.2 m for the Mevo Gen2, 5.85 m for the KIT. If your room is shorter than that, radar is out whatever your handedness.
Square Golf: the ball moves, not the unit
The Square Golf is a camera unit, but it faces the hitting area from behind and to the side rather than from across the ball. Square Golf's OMNI manual puts the ready zone 35 cm in front of the unit and 5 cm to the right, or to the left for left-handed players, and handedness is a setting in the app (a long press on the OMNI's button does the same). So the unit stays where it is and the ball shifts about 10 cm. For a mixed household on a budget, that's the one I'd look at first; note that Square Golf is an indoor-only unit.
Overhead cameras
The Uneekor EYE XO2 and EYE XR and the Foresight Falcon and GCHawk bolt to the ceiling and look down on the ball. Nothing sits on the mat, and both hands share one spot. They need a tall, fixed ceiling: Uneekor asks for 2.7 m to 3.0 m and Foresight's Falcon manual 2.9 m to 3.2 m. These suit a dedicated room rather than a garage with a car in it.
Units that cross to the other side
The camera units that sit beside the ball, facing it from across the player, are the ones to think about.
- Garmin Approach R50: Garmin's manual places the R50 0.5 m to the side of the tee facing the ball, so a left-hander moves it across; handedness is a profile setting. Garmin doesn't state it either way, but the placement diagram shows the unit across the ball from the player, and that geometry decides it. The good news is that Garmin says it compensates for uneven surfaces and needs no levelling, so the move is a carry and a glance at the screen to see the ball inside the hitting area, not a full re-level.
- Foresight GC3 and GC3S: 40 cm to 60 cm (16 to 24 in) beside the ball per Foresight's manual, level with the top of the mat, facing the ball. It crosses over for the other hand, and because it needs to be level with the mat, I'd mark both positions with tape.
- Uneekor EYE MINI and EYE MINI LITE: beside the ball, aligned parallel to the target line with the supplied rod, with a ready zone 20 cm to 40 cm from the unit. Same story: it crosses over, and the alignment rod makes the re-set quick.
- SkyTrak+ and ST MAX: next to the ball with the ball on the red laser dot and the unit level with the top of the mat. SkyTrak's own checklist for missed shots says to check the handedness matches the session settings, and its alignment guide suggests marking the unit's position with tape if you plan to move it, which is what a two-handed household will be doing.
None of this makes those units a bad choice. The R50 and GC3 are the two I recommend most often for a single player. It just means a mixed household should allow time for each swap and keep both positions marked.

Placement from each maker's manual or setup guide, checked 8 October 2026. Garmin's Approach R50 owner's manual and FlightScope's Mevo Gen2 page are the two I'd read first. Every unit is on our launch monitors collection with its live price.
Laying out a bay for two hands
The launch monitor is half of it. Three other things decide whether a shared bay works.
- Ball in the middle. If everyone swings the same way, the mat can sit off-centre to give the swing more room. A mixed household needs the ball in the middle of the bay so both sides have the same space, and that takes width: I'd want a SIM 2 (3.26 m of wall) or wider rather than a SIM 1. Will a golf simulator fit my room? has the wall width for every size.
- A symmetrical mat. A combination mat with a hitting strip on one side and stance turf on the other is single-handed by design; a left-hander ends up standing on the strip. A square mat with the hitting area in the middle, like the Tee Turf mat in our room packages, works both ways without being turned.
- Profiles set up in advance. Every unit here stores a profile per player with handedness in it. Set them up once, name them, and the swap is a tap rather than a menu hunt.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need two launch monitors for a left- and right-handed household?
No. One unit serves both; handedness is a per-player setting on every unit we sell. Choose a radar unit, a Square Golf or an overhead camera if you'd rather the unit never moved.
Does the Garmin R50 work for left-handed golfers?
Yes. Handedness is a profile setting. Garmin's manual places the unit 0.5 m to the side of the tee facing the ball, across from the player, so a left-hander moves it to the other side of the ball. It needs no levelling, which keeps the move short.
Which launch monitor is best for a mixed household in a short room?
Under 5.2 m, radar is out. Square Golf is the camera unit whose manual mirrors the ball position rather than the unit, so it's the one I'd look at first; the R50 is the better unit if you're happy to move it across. If the R50 is the one, our side-by-side of UK Garmin R50 room packages shows which mat, bay and projector each one ships with.
Does the mat matter?
Yes. Combination mats with a strip on one side only suit one hand. Use a square mat with the hitting area in the centre and put the ball in the middle of the bay.
If two hands share the bay and you don't want to touch the unit between players, pick a radar unit with the length to suit it, a Square Golf, or an overhead camera. If the R50, GC3, Eye Mini or SkyTrak is the right unit for other reasons, go in knowing it crosses the ball each swap and mark both spots with tape.
