The Garmin Approach R10 put personal launch monitors on the map: a pocket-sized doppler radar unit that tracks every club in the bag, runs for 10+ hours on a charge, and doubles as a home simulator through the Garmin Golf app. For golfers who want real numbers at the range and casual course play at home, it remains one of the best value units available.

Space check before you buy

Like all radar units, the R10 sits around 2.4m behind the ball on its tripod and needs a couple of metres of ball flight in front to read the shot. That means it suits garages, garden setups and driving ranges rather than compact 3m-deep indoor bays – for those, look at a camera unit that sits beside or just in front of the ball (SkyTrak+, Square Golf, Bushnell Launch Pro). Indoors or outdoors it's happy either way, as long as it has the space behind the ball.

Software & subscription – the honest bit

All the core metrics, shot tracking and practice-range features work free in the Garmin Golf app. The Home Tee Hero virtual course simulator (42,000+ real courses) needs a Garmin Golf membership (around £8.99/month), and the R10 also connects to third-party sim software such as E6 Connect and Awesome Golf, which carry their own licences.
