“It’s a minefield researching those things.” That’s word for word what Kelvin, a customer building a garden range around our Pro Cage, sent me on WhatsApp after a week of launch monitor research. He’s right — the market runs from £200 to £20,000, half the spec sheets read like radar physics papers, and nobody tells you whether the thing will actually work inside a 3m garden cage until after you’ve bought it. So here is the ladder I talk customers through every week: four rungs, each one a genuine step up, each one proven inside the cages we sell — plus the placement realities and the one returns caveat customers always thank us for mentioning upfront.

The budget ladder at a glance

Every launch monitor we recommend for garden cage use falls into one of two families. Radar units sit behind the ball and track the ball (and club) with Doppler radar — they need space behind you and some ball flight in front. Camera units sit just in front of and beside the ball and photograph the strike — they need almost no room at all. That single distinction decides more than price does, so keep it in mind as you climb the rungs.

Rung 1 — ShotScope LM1 (~£200): make practice honest

The entry point. The ShotScope LM1 gives you ball speed, carry distance and the core numbers that turn ball-bashing into practice. It won’t give you spin-based wedge analysis and it isn’t a simulator, but for a couple of hundred pounds it answers the question that matters most in a garden cage: how far did that actually go? For a lot of customers this is the right first rung — buy the cage and mat properly, add the LM1, and upgrade the monitor later once the practice habit is real.

Rung 2 — Garmin R10 (~£500–600): the budget radar

The R10 is the value pick of the whole market. It’s a proper Doppler radar unit that adds estimated club data and — the big one — simulator app support, so it doubles as an entry ticket to virtual rounds on a tablet or laptop. Carry distances and clubhead speed trends are reliable; spin numbers are estimates rather than measurements, so if spin-calibrated wedge work is your goal, that lives one rung up. Official space requirements are on Garmin’s R10 page, and they match what we measure in customer gardens: roughly 2.4m behind the ball plus ball flight in front.

Rung 3 — FlightScope Mevo Gen2 (~£1,200): our most popular

This is the one I use in my own garden and the one most of our cage customers end up with. The FlightScope Mevo Gen2 is radar accuracy you can build real distance calibration on — measured carry, ball speed and spin that agree with a range session within a club. It’s the sweet spot: serious data without simulator-studio money.

What the FlightScope Pro Package actually adds

This is the question Kelvin spent days trying to answer, so here it is in plain English. The base unit gives you the ball data above. The Pro Package software upgrade unlocks the club-delivery picture: club path (in-to-out or out-to-in through impact), face angle (where the face pointed at strike), the D-plane relationship between them (which is what actually explains your shot shape), and full 3D flight visualisation of every shot. If you want to know why you hit that fade rather than just how far it went, the Pro Package is where that answer lives. If you mainly want carry numbers and wedge distances, the base unit is plenty — and you can upgrade later.

Rung 4 — Garmin R50 (~£4,300): the camera unit with a screen built in

Different family, different life. The R50 is a camera (photometric) unit that sits about 60cm in front of and beside the ball, photographs club and ball at impact, and — the party trick — has a touchscreen and simulator software built into the unit itself. No PC, no laptop, no app-pairing faff: switch it on and you’re playing a course inside your cage. Because it needs no space behind you and barely any ball flight, it fits any 3m cage bay with room to spare. One customer summed his up as “it keeps my sons in the cage for two hours” — at this price it’s as much a family simulator as a practice tool.

The placement reality: what fits where

Here’s the geometry, measured in my own setup rather than copied off a spec sheet. Radar units (LM1, R10, Mevo Gen2) want about 2.4m/8ft behind the ball, plus ball flight in front to read — around 2.4m minimum, with 3–3.5m comfortable. I hit from roughly 3m off the impact panel at 6’1”, with the Mevo on its little tripod 2.4m behind the ball, and the numbers settle beautifully; when I tested it closer, spin readings got flaky. So a radar unit works in a garden setup, but you must plan the strip of space behind your mat when you’re sizing up the garden — our cage sizing guide covers the full footprint maths. Camera units (R50) sit ~60cm in front of the ball, so they fit inside any 3m cage regardless of what’s behind you — which is exactly why the R50 is the answer for tight gardens where the radar geometry won’t stretch.

The returns caveat customers thank us for

Before you buy any of these, know this: launch monitor hardware comes with a 30-day return window, but FlightScope software packages are non-refundable once activated. That includes the Pro Package. It’s not our rule — it’s how FlightScope licences work, and the full detail is on FlightScope’s site — but we’d rather you heard it before checkout than after. The practical advice we give every customer: if you’re at all unsure, buy the Mevo Gen2 unit on its own first, hit balls for a fortnight, and add the Pro Package once you know you want the club-delivery data. You lose nothing by upgrading later; you can’t un-buy the software. Customers regularly tell us we’re the only retailer who said this upfront — which is a strange compliment, but we’ll take it.

Which rung is right for you?

My honest steer, having installed and tested all four in garden cages: if the budget question is “what’s the least I can spend to make practice count?” — LM1. If it’s “I want numbers and the odd virtual round without silly money” — R10. If it’s “I’m building a proper practice station and I want data I can trust for years” — Mevo Gen2, which is why it’s our most popular. And if it’s “I want the simulator experience in the garden, switched on in thirty seconds, and the kids will use it too” — R50. Whichever rung you pick, the monitor is only as good as what it’s reading: a stable stance, a consistent lie and contained ball flight. Do I need a PC or laptop to run any of these?

Not for the Garmin R50 — the screen and simulator software are built into the unit. The LM1 and Mevo work from their own displays and phone apps; the R10 pairs with a phone or tablet for sim play.
