Set up your simulator

How do I set up a Full Swing KIT golf simulator?

Tom Hayward Tom Hayward, founder of OpenGolfer · Last reviewed · 4 min read

The short answer

Charge it, pair it with the Full Swing app and join your Wi-Fi so it can update. Place it on level ground 3.05m directly behind the ball and set the target line. A Windows PC or laptop running Full Swing Golf or GSPro sends the picture to the projector by HDMI. Plan on a 5.85m room.

What's in the box

Full Swing's KIT user guide lists the KIT, a carrying case and a charger. What else arrives depends on what you bought from us:

  • The KIT Studio Lite adds a short-throw projector with mount, an aluminium frame, impact screen, padding, side netting, landing-pad turf, hitting mat, turf extension, and cables and adaptors. It doesn't include a computer.
  • The KIT Studio Plus adds all of that plus a touchscreen gaming laptop with Full Swing Golf already installed.
  • Our SimSpace KIT package adds the SimSpace enclosure, Tee Turf mat, rubber base and the BenQ AH500ST projector with its floor case. It has no computer and no HDMI cable.

What you need ready

  • An iPhone or Android phone for the Full Swing app, and an email address for your Full Swing account.
  • Your Wi-Fi name and password. The KIT installs its own firmware updates over Wi-Fi. Firmware is the unit's built-in software.
  • A Windows PC or laptop for course play on the projector. It comes with the Studio Plus. With the Studio Lite or our SimSpace package, you supply it.
  • An HDMI cable (the standard lead that carries picture and sound) from the PC to the projector, if your package doesn't include one.
  • A tape measure. The KIT's distance behind the ball is the most important number in this setup.

Where it goes in the room

Our rooms start at 3.0m wide, 2.7m high and 4.2m long. A ceiling of 3m or more is ideal, and I plan on about 2.5m from the ball to the screen.

The KIT is a radar that sits behind you, and it needs more room than any other unit we sell. Full Swing's user guide says:

  • Place it on level ground 3.05m (10ft) directly behind the ball, in line with the target.
  • Hit from the target line, and keep the space between the KIT and the ball clear. Shots from off the line, or past obstructions, may be missed.

With 3.05m behind the ball and about 2.5m to the screen, I plan on a room 5.85m long. Full Swing's own minimum for its KIT Studio is 2.75m high, 3.66m wide and 5.5m long.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Charge the KIT with the supplied charger.
  2. Install the Full Swing app on your phone and create your account.
  3. Turn the KIT on and unfold the kickstand.
  4. Pair it with the app. Pairing is the one-time step where the phone and the KIT learn to trust each other.
  5. On the Configure Device screen, pick your Wi-Fi network and follow the prompts.
  6. If the app offers a firmware update, accept it. The light glows orange while it installs. Don't switch the KIT off. Full Swing says it usually takes 15 minutes or more.
  7. Measure 3.05m back from the ball and set the KIT there, directly behind it.
  8. Set the target line in the app or on the KIT's own display, using its built-in camera to line up with the screen.
  9. Choose your club in the app.
  10. On the PC, install Full Swing Golf or GSPro and connect the KIT. Full Swing publishes guides for connecting over Wi-Fi or with a USB-C cable.

Connect to the projector

The PC or laptop sends the picture, not the KIT. Plug the HDMI cable into the PC and into the projector's HDMI input, and select that input on the projector. Then press the Windows key and P together and choose Duplicate or Second screen only. With a Studio package, use the cables and adaptors in the box.

First-shot check

Start a practice session, stand on the target line and hit. Ball speed, carry and spin should appear in the app and on the KIT's display, and the shot should fly on the big screen once Full Swing Golf or GSPro is connected. If nothing reads, check the 3.05m distance and that you're hitting along the target line.

Playing courses

The Full Swing app has a free tier, and the Premium App costs £199 a year. Full Swing Golf for KIT is Full Swing's own course software, with 15 courses (including Spyglass Hill and TPC venues) and a driving range. It runs on a PC and costs £399 a year in the UK, according to Full Swing Europe. GSPro works with the KIT on a Windows PC, at $250 a year.

Full Swing also offers E6 Connect gameplay. Its 2021 posts list Basic at $299 a year and Expanded at $599 a year, so check current pricing with Full Swing. Awesome Golf doesn't list the KIT as supported.

The three things that most often go wrong

The room is too short

If you can't get 3.05m behind the ball and about 2.5m in front, the KIT can't sit where it needs to. Measure before you order.

A firmware update gets interrupted

Leave it alone while the light is orange. If an update runs past 25 minutes, Full Swing says to contact its support.

Shots are missed or pulled offline

Re-set the target line, stand on it, and make sure nothing sits between the KIT and the ball. Check the unit is on level ground.

Times are my estimates, except the firmware time, which is from Full Swing's help centre. Plan on a 5.85m room: 3.05m behind the ball plus about 2.5m to the screen.

Best practice

  1. Measure the 3.05mFull Swing places the KIT 10ft (3.05m) directly behind the ball. Mark the floor so it goes back in the same spot every time.
  2. Update before your first sessionJoin Wi-Fi early so any firmware update can finish. It usually takes 15 minutes or more.
  3. Hit along the target lineFull Swing says shots from outside the target line, or past obstructions, may be missed.
  4. Clean it gentlyUse a soft cloth only. Full Swing says no chemicals and no compressed air, and to store it in its case.

Gotchas to avoid

  • Room lengthThe KIT needs 3.05m behind the ball. With about 2.5m to the screen, plan on 5.85m of room length.
  • Switching off mid-updateAn orange light means firmware is installing. Powering down can interrupt it. Past 25 minutes, contact Full Swing.
  • Lite has no computerThe Studio Lite and our SimSpace KIT package need your own Windows PC or laptop for course play. The Studio Plus includes one.
  • Course software is extraFull Swing Golf for KIT is £399 a year and GSPro $250 a year. The app's free tier covers data, not courses.

Our recommendation

The KIT itself sets up in minutes. The work is in the room: 3.05m behind the ball, a Windows PC and the right software.

If you want everything in one delivery
The KIT Studio Plus includes the laptop with Full Swing Golf already loaded.
If you already own a gaming PC or laptop
The KIT Studio Lite or our SimSpace KIT package works with it.
If your room is under 5.85m long
Choose a camera unit that sits beside the ball instead.

Questions people ask

How far behind the ball does the KIT go?

3.05m (10ft), directly behind the ball on level ground and in line with the target. With about 2.5m from ball to screen, I plan on a room 5.85m long.

For course play on a projector, yes. Full Swing Golf for KIT is PC software, and GSPro runs on Windows. The KIT Studio Plus includes a laptop. The Studio Lite and our SimSpace package don't.

How does the KIT update?

Over Wi-Fi. When an update is available, the Full Swing app prompts you. The light glows orange while it installs, which usually takes 15 minutes or more. Don't switch it off until it finishes.

What does the software cost?

Full Swing Europe lists Full Swing Golf for KIT at £399 a year and the Premium App at £199 a year for UK buyers. There's also a free app tier. GSPro is $250 a year.

Can I use the KIT outdoors too?

Yes. Full Swing designed it for both. Outdoors it also sits 10ft behind the ball, and the app shows your numbers and video.
